For most standard print-on-demand artwork, begin with a large, clean source file and target 300 DPI at the final print size. Use a transparent PNG for apparel graphics that should not have a rectangular background. Official Printify File Requirements

Printify currently supports JPEG, PNG, and SVG design files. JPEG and PNG files can be up to 100 MB, while SVG files can be up to 20 MB.

Printify recommends 300 DPI for most JPEG and PNG artwork. Large-format products such as blankets, leggings, and tapestries may use lower recommended resolutions, commonly between 120 and 150 DPI, because their print areas are much larger.

How to Find the Exact Printify Image Size

The most accurate image dimensions are displayed inside Printify Product Creator for the product you are designing. Requirements can differ between two providers offering similar shirts, and the front, back, sleeve, neck-label, pocket, and hood areas can each have their own dimensions.

1. Open the product in Printify Product Creator.
2. Select the print area you want to design.
3. Open the upload or design panel.
4. Review the recommended pixel dimensions.
5. Upload your artwork and inspect the quality indicator.
6. Scale and position the design inside the printable boundary.
7. Preview every product color and enabled variant.

The available print area represents the maximum printable space. Your design does not have to fill the entire area. A smaller chest graphic can use the same product canvas as a large front graphic, provided the effective resolution remains high enough.

Common Printify Artwork Canvas Sizes

The following dimensions are practical starting canvases for preparing print-on-demand artwork. They are not guaranteed specifications for every Printify product.

Starting with a larger canvas gives you flexibility, but uploading an unnecessarily enormous file does not improve the print once the artwork already exceeds the required effective resolution.

Printify DPI and Resolution Explained

DPI means dots per inch. In practical print-file preparation, it describes how much image information is available for each inch of the final printed design.

A 3000-pixel-wide image printed at 10 inches wide has an effective resolution of 300 DPI. The same image enlarged to 20 inches wide has an effective resolution of only 150 DPI.

This is why a file can say “300 DPI” in image-editing software and still trigger a low-resolution warning. The artwork may not contain enough actual pixels for the size at which it is being printed.

Example

A design that is 3600 pixels wide can print at approximately 12 inches wide at 300 DPI:

3600 pixels ÷ 300 DPI = 12 inches

If that same design is printed 15 inches wide, its effective resolution becomes:

3600 pixels ÷ 15 inches = 240 DPI

How to Calculate the Required Pixel Dimensions

When you know the desired printed size, multiply the width and height in inches by the target DPI.

These calculations help you determine whether your source artwork contains enough pixels. They do not override the Product Creator dimensions for a specific Printify product.

PNG vs JPG vs SVG for Printify

PNG

PNG is usually the best format for shirt graphics, illustrations, typography, logos, and designs that need transparent space around the artwork. It preserves hard edges and supports transparency.

JPG or JPEG

JPG is useful for photographs, posters, rectangular artwork, and products where transparency is unnecessary. JPG files are often smaller than PNG files, but they use lossy compression and do not support transparent backgrounds.

SVG

SVG stores compatible artwork as scalable vector shapes. It can remain sharp when resized, making it useful for logos, lettering, and simple illustrations. Complex effects, unsupported fonts, or embedded elements may need to be converted or outlined before uploading.

When to Use a Transparent Background

Transparent PNG artwork allows the garment color to show around and through the design. This avoids printing an unwanted white, black, or colored rectangle behind the artwork.

Transparency is especially useful for:

Printify Product Creator displays the available print boundaries for each design area. Some products also display a safe area or require bleed.

Safe area

Keep critical content such as text, faces, logos, borders, and small details inside the safe area. Minor production movement can occur, so important elements should not sit directly against a trim line, seam, or printable boundary.

Bleed

Bleed extends artwork beyond the final visible edge. It is important for products where the design must reach the edge without leaving an unintended unprinted strip.

All-over-print products

All-over-print products need special attention because their panels are cut, sewn, and assembled after printing. Avoid placing critical text or perfectly aligned artwork across seams, zippers, collars, or cuffs.

Printify Artwork Placement and Scaling

Uploading a large file does not mean you should automatically fill the complete printable area. The correct placement depends on the design and product.

• Use smaller dimensions for left-chest and pocket-style graphics.
• Leave comfortable visual space between the artwork and collar.
• Check the design on every shirt color included in the listing.
• Create light and dark artwork versions when one version lacks contrast on certain garment colors.
• Avoid placing important details where seams, drawstrings, or pockets may interfere.
• Review front, back, sleeve, and label print areas separately.

Print areas can also scale differently between garment sizes depending on the provider and production setup. Order a sample before committing to a large advertising campaign or bulk order.

How to Fix Printify Low-Resolution Warnings

A low-resolution warning usually means the artwork is being printed larger than its pixel dimensions can support.

1. Reduce the design size inside Product Creator.
2. Return to the original source artwork.
3. Export the artwork at larger pixel dimensions.
4. Use vector artwork when appropriate.
5. Avoid repeatedly enlarging an already small JPG or PNG.
6. Inspect text, outlines, and fine details at full size.

An AI upscaler may improve some artwork, but it cannot perfectly reconstruct every missing detail. Clean source artwork will normally produce a better result than enlarging a heavily compressed image downloaded from social media or a website preview.

You can use the free image resizer to create exact pixel dimensions, but resizing a small file upward does not automatically restore lost quality.

Printify Print Files vs Ecommerce Product Images

Your production file and your website image have different jobs. Do not use the same optimization strategy for both.

A print file may be a large transparent PNG. A website mockup can usually be exported as a smaller JPG, WebP, or AVIF file so the product page loads faster.
