Printify Image Size Guide

Pixel dimensions · 300 DPI · File formats · Print areas · Safe zones

Printify Image Size Requirements at a Glance

The correct Printify image size depends on the exact product, print provider, decoration method, and print area you select. There is no single pixel size that is guaranteed to fit every Printify t-shirt, hoodie, mug, sleeve, label, poster, or all-over-print product.

For most standard print-on-demand artwork, begin with a large, clean source file and target 300 DPI at the final print size. Use a transparent PNG for apparel graphics that should not have a rectangular background. Before publishing the product, verify the artwork against the dimensions and image quality indicator shown inside Printify Product Creator.

Quick answer: A 4500 × 5400 px transparent PNG is a useful working canvas for many shirt graphics, but it is not a universal Printify requirement. The exact Product Creator specification should always take priority.

Official Printify File Requirements

Printify currently supports JPEG, PNG, and SVG design files. JPEG and PNG files can be up to 100 MB, while SVG files can be up to 20 MB.

Printify recommends 300 DPI for most JPEG and PNG artwork. Large-format products such as blankets, leggings, and tapestries may use lower recommended resolutions, commonly between 120 and 150 DPI, because their print areas are much larger.

Requirement Printify Guidance
Supported raster formats PNG and JPEG
Supported vector format SVG
Recommended raster resolution Usually 300 DPI
Large-format product resolution May be approximately 120–150 DPI
Maximum PNG/JPEG size 100 MB
Maximum SVG size 20 MB
Exact print dimensions Shown for each product and print area in Product Creator
Do not rely on DPI alone. Changing a file from 72 DPI to 300 DPI without adding real image detail does not make the artwork sharper. The file must contain enough actual pixels for its final printed dimensions.

How to Find the Exact Printify Image Size

The most accurate image dimensions are displayed inside Printify Product Creator for the product you are designing. Requirements can differ between two providers offering similar shirts, and the front, back, sleeve, neck-label, pocket, and hood areas can each have their own dimensions.

  1. Open the product in Printify Product Creator.
  2. Select the print area you want to design.
  3. Open the upload or design panel.
  4. Review the recommended pixel dimensions.
  5. Upload your artwork and inspect the quality indicator.
  6. Scale and position the design inside the printable boundary.
  7. Preview every product color and enabled variant.

The available print area represents the maximum printable space. Your design does not have to fill the entire area. A smaller chest graphic can use the same product canvas as a large front graphic, provided the effective resolution remains high enough.

Common Printify Artwork Canvas Sizes

The following dimensions are practical starting canvases for preparing print-on-demand artwork. They are not guaranteed specifications for every Printify product.

Artwork Type Useful Working Canvas Recommended Format
Full front shirt graphic 4500 × 5400 px Transparent PNG
Full back shirt graphic 4500 × 5400 px Transparent PNG
Square chest or pocket artwork 1800 × 1800 px or larger Transparent PNG
Sleeve artwork 1800 × 1800 px or larger Transparent PNG
Wide mug artwork Use the exact Product Creator ratio PNG or JPG
Poster or photographic product Match the product aspect ratio High-quality JPG
All-over-print product Use the exact product template Product specific

Starting with a larger canvas gives you flexibility, but uploading an unnecessarily enormous file does not improve the print once the artwork already exceeds the required effective resolution.

Printify DPI and Resolution Explained

DPI means dots per inch. In practical print-file preparation, it describes how much image information is available for each inch of the final printed design.

A 3000-pixel-wide image printed at 10 inches wide has an effective resolution of 300 DPI. The same image enlarged to 20 inches wide has an effective resolution of only 150 DPI.

Effective DPI formula:
image width in pixels ÷ printed width in inches = effective DPI

This is why a file can say “300 DPI” in image-editing software and still trigger a low-resolution warning. The artwork may not contain enough actual pixels for the size at which it is being printed.

Example

A design that is 3600 pixels wide can print at approximately 12 inches wide at 300 DPI:

3600 pixels ÷ 300 DPI = 12 inches

If that same design is printed 15 inches wide, its effective resolution becomes:

3600 pixels ÷ 15 inches = 240 DPI

How to Calculate the Required Pixel Dimensions

When you know the desired printed size, multiply the width and height in inches by the target DPI.

Pixel formula:
printed inches × target DPI = required pixels
Printed Size At 300 DPI At 150 DPI
4 × 4 inches 1200 × 1200 px 600 × 600 px
10 × 12 inches 3000 × 3600 px 1500 × 1800 px
12 × 16 inches 3600 × 4800 px 1800 × 2400 px
15 × 18 inches 4500 × 5400 px 2250 × 2700 px

These calculations help you determine whether your source artwork contains enough pixels. They do not override the Product Creator dimensions for a specific Printify product.

PNG vs JPG vs SVG for Printify

PNG

PNG is usually the best format for shirt graphics, illustrations, typography, logos, and designs that need transparent space around the artwork. It preserves hard edges and supports transparency.

JPG or JPEG

JPG is useful for photographs, posters, rectangular artwork, and products where transparency is unnecessary. JPG files are often smaller than PNG files, but they use lossy compression and do not support transparent backgrounds.

SVG

SVG stores compatible artwork as scalable vector shapes. It can remain sharp when resized, making it useful for logos, lettering, and simple illustrations. Complex effects, unsupported fonts, or embedded elements may need to be converted or outlined before uploading.

Format Best For Transparency
PNG Apparel graphics, text, logos, illustrations Yes
JPG Photos, posters, full rectangular artwork No
SVG Compatible vector logos and simple graphics Yes

When to Use a Transparent Background

Transparent PNG artwork allows the garment color to show around and through the design. This avoids printing an unwanted white, black, or colored rectangle behind the artwork.

Transparency is especially useful for:

  • T-shirt and hoodie graphics
  • Chest logos
  • Sleeve prints
  • Neck labels
  • Typography designs
  • Die-cut style illustrations

A transparent background is not always necessary. Full-bleed photographs, rectangular posters, mugs, canvases, and all-over patterns may intentionally include a background.

Check the actual transparency. A checkerboard visible in an editor usually represents transparency. A checkerboard embedded as part of the image is not transparent.

Printify Safe Areas, Bleed, and Print Boundaries

Printify Product Creator displays the available print boundaries for each design area. Some products also display a safe area or require bleed.

Safe area

Keep critical content such as text, faces, logos, borders, and small details inside the safe area. Minor production movement can occur, so important elements should not sit directly against a trim line, seam, or printable boundary.

Bleed

Bleed extends artwork beyond the final visible edge. It is important for products where the design must reach the edge without leaving an unintended unprinted strip.

All-over-print products

All-over-print products need special attention because their panels are cut, sewn, and assembled after printing. Avoid placing critical text or perfectly aligned artwork across seams, zippers, collars, or cuffs.

Printify Artwork Placement and Scaling

Uploading a large file does not mean you should automatically fill the complete printable area. The correct placement depends on the design and product.

  • Use smaller dimensions for left-chest and pocket-style graphics.
  • Leave comfortable visual space between the artwork and collar.
  • Check the design on every shirt color included in the listing.
  • Create light and dark artwork versions when one version lacks contrast on certain garment colors.
  • Avoid placing important details where seams, drawstrings, or pockets may interfere.
  • Review front, back, sleeve, and label print areas separately.

Print areas can also scale differently between garment sizes depending on the provider and production setup. Order a sample before committing to a large advertising campaign or bulk order.

How to Fix Printify Low-Resolution Warnings

A low-resolution warning usually means the artwork is being printed larger than its pixel dimensions can support.

  1. Reduce the design size inside Product Creator.
  2. Return to the original source artwork.
  3. Export the artwork at larger pixel dimensions.
  4. Use vector artwork when appropriate.
  5. Avoid repeatedly enlarging an already small JPG or PNG.
  6. Inspect text, outlines, and fine details at full size.

An AI upscaler may improve some artwork, but it cannot perfectly reconstruct every missing detail. Clean source artwork will normally produce a better result than enlarging a heavily compressed image downloaded from social media or a website preview.

You can use the free image resizer to create exact pixel dimensions, but resizing a small file upward does not automatically restore lost quality.

Printify Print Files vs Ecommerce Product Images

Your production file and your website image have different jobs. Do not use the same optimization strategy for both.

File Type Main Purpose Priority
Printify production file Printing the physical product Resolution and print accuracy
Product-page image Displaying the product online Appearance, speed, and SEO
Social-sharing image Facebook, X, Pinterest, and messages Correct ratio and readable composition

A print file may be a large transparent PNG. A website mockup can usually be exported as a smaller JPG, WebP, or AVIF file so the product page loads faster.

You can also use the free image compressor to reduce mockup file sizes before uploading them to Shopify, Etsy, or your own store.

Printify Artwork Upload Checklist

  • Open the exact product and provider in Product Creator.
  • Check each front, back, sleeve, hood, pocket, or label area.
  • Confirm the recommended pixel dimensions.
  • Use 300 DPI for most standard raster artwork.
  • Use enough real pixels for the final print size.
  • Choose PNG when the artwork requires transparency.
  • Keep important content inside the safe area.
  • Extend backgrounds through the bleed area when required.
  • Inspect the Product Creator image-quality indicator.
  • Preview every enabled garment color.
  • Check small text and thin lines at full size.
  • Order a sample before scaling the listing.
  • Optimize mockups separately for your product page.

Common Printify Image Preparation Mistakes

  • Treating 4500 × 5400 px as a requirement for every product.
  • Changing only the DPI metadata without adding real image detail.
  • Stretching a small internet image across a large print area.
  • Uploading a JPG when the design needs transparent space.
  • Placing text against the edge of the printable boundary.
  • Forgetting to preview artwork on light and dark garments.
  • Compressing the production file so heavily that edges become blurry or blocky.
  • Uploading a huge production PNG directly to an ecommerce page instead of using an optimized product mockup.
  • Assuming the digital mockup guarantees exact printed placement and color.

Printify Image Size FAQ

What image size should I use for Printify?

There is no single image size that works for every Printify product. Each product, print provider, and print area can have different requirements. Open the product in Printify Product Creator, select the print area, and check the recommended pixel dimensions shown in the upload panel.

Is 4500 by 5400 pixels good for Printify shirts?

A 4500 by 5400 pixel transparent PNG is a useful high-resolution working canvas for many apparel designs, but it is not a universal Printify requirement. Always compare the artwork with the exact dimensions and quality indicator shown for the selected product and print provider.

Does Printify require 300 DPI?

Printify recommends 300 DPI for most JPEG and PNG print files. Some large-format products may use lower recommended resolutions, such as 120 to 150 DPI. Pixel dimensions and the effective resolution at the final print size are more important than changing the DPI metadata alone.

Should Printify artwork be PNG or JPG?

PNG is generally best for apparel graphics, logos, text, and designs that require transparency. JPG is useful for photographs or rectangular artwork that does not need a transparent background. Printify also supports SVG for compatible vector artwork.

What is the maximum Printify upload size?

Printify currently allows JPEG and PNG files up to 100 MB and SVG files up to 20 MB. File limits and supported formats may change, so confirm them in Printify before preparing a large batch of artwork.

Why does Printify say my image has low resolution?

The artwork may not contain enough pixels for the size at which it has been placed. Enlarging a small image inside Product Creator lowers its effective resolution. Reduce its printed size or begin with a larger, cleaner source file.

Do I need a transparent background for Printify?

A transparent background is recommended for most apparel graphics when you want the garment color to show around the design. Full rectangular photographs, posters, mugs, and all-over-print designs may not require transparency.
